Who takes this exam
The California B — General Building Contractor exam is for contractors who run projects involving at least two unrelated building trades beyond framing or carpentry. Think homebuilders, remodel contractors, tenant-improvement GCs, and developers who self-perform.
The classification is built for people managing the full job: coordinating subs, sequencing work, reading plans, handling code issues, estimating scope, and keeping multiple parts of a project moving at the same time. If your work usually crosses framing, concrete, roofing, finishes, and the core mechanical trades, B is the lane you're preparing for. If you're pursuing a single-trade license such as electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, you're looking at a C-classification instead — not B.
Most first-time California applicants also need to pass Law & Business alongside the Class B exam, which is why this prep bundles both into one practice flow.
