About this free practice test

Knowing how much material to order is different from knowing how to repair a membrane or install tile. This roofing sample checks both estimating and decisions tied to particular roof systems. It groups questions by CSLB topic areas, with low-slope and steep-slope work kept distinct in your feedback. Use the result to choose what to review; it does not predict whether you will pass. Full prep adds the complete question bank, saved history and readiness tracking.

Free C-39 Roofing Contractor practice test — FAQ

Is there a free C-39 license practice test PDF?

CSLB publishes a free Roofing (C-39) study-guide PDF with the topic outline, reference list and three sample questions. Follow the study-guide link on this page to get it. Our 20-question sample runs online with instant explanations; Test2Pro does not provide a downloadable PDF version of this test.

Which roofing manuals and codes does CSLB list for C-39?

The guide lists four NRCA Roofing Manuals (steep-slope systems, membrane systems, metal panel and SPF systems, and architectural metal flashing), the Concrete and Clay Tile Installation Manual, the 2022 California Building, Residential and Energy Codes, and the Cal/OSHA safety orders. The exam is closed-book, so use these materials for study, not during testing.

How hard is the C-39 roofing exam?

The guide covers estimating, job preparation, low-slope work, steep-slope work and safety. Steep-Slope Roof Projects is the largest area of the outline. You have 3-1/2 hours for the closed-book exam, with four choices and one best answer per question. There is no penalty for guessing. If you mainly work on one roof system, use the outline to find other systems to review.

Can I take the C-39 exam in Spanish?

Yes. C-39 is on CSLB's list of exams offered in Spanish, and so is Law & Business. You can also prepare in Spanish: the Test2Pro site works in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian, and practice questions can be shown in 8 languages.

What roofing math is on the C-39 exam?

This sample includes roof pitch from rise and run, material quantities in roofing squares and pallets, and a deck-deflection calculation. CSLB's guide also gives a roofing-area example and says a calculator is provided for computation questions. Review unit conversions and quantity rounding as you work through the explanations.

Does the C-39 practice test cover low-slope and steep-slope roofing?

Yes. Low-slope questions include TPO patch preparation, thermoplastic membrane welding and built-up roof repairs. Steep-slope questions cover copper-panel fastening, asphalt-shingle repair, wood-shingle slopes and tile installation. The sample gives you selected decisions from both groups, with explanations to help identify which roof systems need more review.

How to use your sample score

Look for missed questions in estimating, roof-system installation and repair, or safety. Within installation and repair, note the roof system involved so you can review the unfamiliar method.
