Where to download your CSLB study guide PDF
A CSLB study guide is a free outline of 2–3 pages for a California contractor license exam. Download yours from CSLB's Examination Study Guides page.
There is a guide in English and Spanish for Law & Business and each classification with a trade exam.
For the exams below, our Test2Pro exam pages link to the CSLB PDF. Each page also shows the exam's topic weights and has a free practice test.
- Law & Business study guide and free test
- Class B General Building study guide and free test
- C‑10 Electrical study guide and free test
- C‑7 Low Voltage study guide and free test
- C‑20 HVAC study guide and free test
- C‑36 Plumbing study guide and free test
- C‑39 Roofing study guide and free test
- C‑46 Solar study guide and free test
- C‑60 Welding study guide and free test
For other classifications, use CSLB's page above. C‑61 Limited Specialty has no trade exam, so it has no trade study guide.
What's inside a CSLB study guide
The guide lists exam topics, their approximate weights, sample questions and reference books. It also explains the test rules and question format.
- Topics and weights. Each section has a percentage showing roughly how much of the exam it covers. The subtopics show what to study.
- Test policy. The guide explains the closed-book rule.
- Test strategy. It explains the answer choices, calculations and guessing policy.
- Three sample questions. These show the question style, with the correct answers marked.
- Resources. This list names reference books, code editions and publishers.
Is there a study book for the California contractor license exam?
Your CSLB guide lists books to use for that exam. For Law & Business, the main reference is the California Contractors License Law & Reference Book.
Read it free as a PDF on CSLB's Guides and Publications page or buy the printed book from the publisher. See our Law & Business page for the exam's topic areas.
For trade exams, use the reference list in your guide. CSLB notes that you can find books from sources other than the listed publishers. You can also read California's codes free online through the Building Standards Commission.
Is the free CSLB study guide enough?
The guide gives you an outline, but it does not teach the material. It has three sample questions, no teaching explanations and no plan sheets.
Use the listed books to study the topics you need to learn. Add practice questions with explanations so you can understand your mistakes.
CSLB says most trade exams include questions about accompanying blueprints or drawings. Practice reading plans as part of your trade preparation.
Test2Pro's trade-exam practice includes original plan-sheet questions. The question shows the sheet without hints. After you answer, the explanation marks where to find the answer on the sheet. To see how our practice works, start with the free test on your exam page.
Check that your study material is current
Compare your books and prep material with the current CSLB guide. Check both the exam date in the heading and the code editions in the resource list.
- Check the date the guide applies to. The date at the top tells you which scheduled exams the guide covers. It is not the date the guide was last updated.
- Match the code editions. The C‑7 guide lists the 2022 California codes, C‑39 lists 2022 and C‑46 lists 2022. California's 2025 codes took effect on January 1, 2026. For exam prep, follow the edition your guide lists.
- Check the prep provider's version. CSLB says it updates its exams every five to seven years, so older material can be out of date. If a book or course does not say which guide or code edition it follows, ask before you buy.
Check the CSLB guide again before your exam date.
How to study for the CSLB exam
Use the guide's topic weights to divide your study time. Then adjust for the topics you know well and those you need to learn.
The hours below are a planning example, not a required study schedule.
- Make a topic checklist. Use the subtopics in your guide. Mark what you know from work and what needs more study.
- Count your available hours. For example, 6 weeks at 10 hours a week gives you 60 hours.
- Reserve time for practice and review. In this example, keep the last 10 hours for practice exams and reviewing mistakes. Include timed practice to work on your pace.
- Divide the remaining hours by weight. With 50 hours left, a section worth about 30% gets about 15 hours. A section worth about 15% gets 7 to 8 hours.
- Adjust for your experience. Give more time to topics you rarely use at work. Read the matching parts of the listed books. Keep smaller exam sections on your checklist too.
- Practice, then go deeper where you miss. Answer questions on each section early. Where you keep missing, go back to that topic in the guide and the listed books, then practice it again until the misses stop.
If you take both Law & Business and a trade exam, make a separate plan for each. They have different guides and topic weights.
How to judge whether you're ready
Check how you do on unfamiliar questions and whether you can explain your answers. Repeatedly scoring well on a memorized set can hide gaps in what you know.
Some test-takers who passed say they practiced until they scored about 90% or higher. That is their personal target, not a CSLB passing score. CSLB says the passing percentage varies by exam, and you can ask CSLB about it.
Some test-takers also report that only part of their exam looked like their practice questions. One who failed the Class B exam counted about 30 similar questions.
Look for these signs together:
- You do well on questions you have not seen before.
- You understand the topics behind your mistakes.
- You finish timed practice without rushing.
- For trade topics that involve plans, you can find the needed information on a sheet.
What to expect on the CSLB exam
You have 3.5 hours for each exam. CSLB publishes the format, but it does not publish the passing score or the number of questions.
Each question has 4 answer choices and one best answer. There is no penalty for guessing.
You are told the required passing score at the test site. It can differ by exam. For testing rules and scheduling, see CSLB's exam FAQ.
How many questions are on the CSLB exam?
CSLB doesn't publish the number. People who took the exam report about 115 questions.
Is the CSLB exam hard?
It depends on how well you know the topics in your guide. Test-takers who wrote about their exams mention:
- questions worded indirectly;
- plan-reading and math questions that take time on trade exams;
- many Law & Business questions on contracts, payments and liens.
One test-taker with more than ten years in the trade still found the trade exam tough. So check your knowledge with practice questions instead of relying on years in the trade, and study the sections you rarely use at work.
Is the CSLB exam open book? Can I bring a calculator?
Law & Business and trade exams at the test center are closed book. You cannot bring books, notes or your own calculator into the testing room. A calculator is provided.
If you didn't pass: plan your retake
Use your failing score report to find the sections that need more study. Its section breakdown matches the sections in your CSLB study guide.
Give more study time to your weakest sections. Review the references for those topics and change how you practice if you keep making the same mistakes.
How many times can I retake the CSLB exam?
As many times as you need while you are within 18 months of CSLB accepting your application. After each attempt, you must wait 21 days before you test again, and you pay a new exam fee to PSI each time. If you test less than 21 days before that period ends, that attempt is your last chance. Check CSLB's exam FAQ for the rules.
Be careful with "real exam questions"
Treat sets sold as "real" CSLB exam questions with caution. CSLB treats sharing test questions with schools, businesses or other people as an exam security violation.
CSLB does not let you review the questions after your exam. Listed penalties for security violations include automatic failure, misdemeanor prosecution and a one-year ban on applying for a CSLB license. See Get Licensed to Build.
CSLB says no school or application preparation organization is affiliated with it or acts as its agent.
Test2Pro provides independent online prep. Our questions are original practice questions written to the CSLB topic areas.
Are the study guides and exams available in Spanish?
Every CSLB study guide has a Spanish version. The exams offered in Spanish are Law & Business, B, C‑8, C‑9, C‑15, C‑27, C‑33, C‑36, C‑39 and C‑54.
For other exams, CSLB may approve a translator you choose. Get approval in advance through CSLB; see its exam FAQ.
On Test2Pro, practice questions can be shown in 8 languages, including Spanish. The site itself works in English, Spanish, Chinese and Russian.
Can I get testing accommodations for a disability?
Yes. Send CSLB the Accommodation Request for Examination form and get approval before you schedule your exam.
If you schedule first, you may have to test without the accommodation or cancel. See CSLB's exam FAQ for the request process.
Where studying fits on the path to your license
Once CSLB accepts your application, you have 18 months to pass your exams. Studying is one step alongside fingerprints, bonds, insurance and other license requirements.
What is License Path?
License Path is a step-by-step checklist in your free Test2Pro account. It walks you through the seven steps from getting ready to apply to the day CSLB issues your license, changes with your answers and can check your application status with CSLB.
A step-by-step article, including our own guides, has to show the same steps to everyone. License Path in your free Test2Pro account builds the checklist for your case. Your answers about your experience and business tailor the checklist items and forms in each of the seven steps, such as LLC or additional-personnel forms. It also asks whether you need a qualifying individual bond and adds that item if you do.
- Free with an account: The first three steps cover getting ready to apply, the application package and submitting it. Enter your application number and PIN for a limited CSLB check showing your application status and exam date.
- With a trade course: the later steps, your application void date with a countdown, and repeat CSLB checks. At the Exams step, you see your CSLB exam status beside your Test2Pro study progress.
License Path works in English, Spanish, Chinese and Russian. Test2Pro does not submit applications; CSLB handles licensing.
Prefer paper? Our free checklist shows the typical path to a California contractor license on four printable pages. It follows one common case and marks the points where your path may differ. For a checklist built around your own case, use License Path.
