What this free test covers

Try 20 original practice questions covering mounting-fastener quantities, electrical resistance, collector area and array installation. The sample includes PV disconnects and conductors, solar thermal heat exchangers, freeze protection, maintenance and lifting safety. See your result by published CSLB topic area to identify whether electrical, mounting or thermal-system topics need more review.

Exam topic areas

The C-46 Solar Contractor exam draws from these published CSLB topic areas. The percentages show approximate exam weights; your sample result groups answers by the same areas.

About this free practice test

Solar practice needs to distinguish photovoltaic work from solar thermal systems. This sample moves from array mounting and electrical connections to pool heating, heat exchangers and freeze protection. Questions are grouped by CSLB topic areas so you can see where familiar PV work and less familiar thermal tasks affect your result. Use that breakdown to plan your next review; it does not predict whether you will pass. Full prep adds the complete question bank, saved history and readiness tracking.

Free C-46 Solar Contractor practice test — FAQ

Where can I get the free C-46 study guide?

Open CSLB's free Solar (C-46) study guide through the study-guide link on this page. The PDF includes the topic outline, study references and three sample questions. For additional practice, use the online test above: it contains 20 original questions with explanations and a result grouped by topic.

Which codes and references does CSLB list for C-46?

The guide lists the 2022 California Electrical, Building, Energy, Mechanical, Plumbing and Fire Codes, the Uniform Solar, Hydronics and Geothermal Code (2021), the OG-300 guidelines for certifying solar water heating systems, Mike Holt's guide to NEC requirements for solar PV systems (2020), Ugly's Electrical References, solar hot water and PV textbooks, and the Cal/OSHA safety orders. The exam is closed-book, so these are study references.

How hard is the C-46 solar exam?

PV installation is only part of the outline; mounting, solar thermal systems, maintenance and safety also matter. Photovoltaic (PV) System Installation and Commissioning is the largest area of the outline. The closed-book exam allows 3-1/2 hours. Each question offers four choices with one best answer, and there is no penalty for guessing. Review unfamiliar thermal and service topics as well as PV work.

Can I take the C-46 exam in Spanish?

No. C-46 is not on CSLB's current Spanish-exam list, although Law & Business is. If no translated exam is available, CSLB may allow a translator you choose, approved in advance. A Spanish study guide does not mean the exam itself is in Spanish. On Test2Pro, the site works in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian, and practice questions can be shown in 8 languages.

What math is on the C-46 exam?

In this sample, calculations include mounting-fastener quantities, resistance from power and voltage, and collector area for a solar-heated pool. CSLB's guide also includes an array-power example, separate from these sample topics. The guide says some exam questions require computation and that a calculator will be provided.

Does the C-46 practice test include solar thermal questions?

Yes. You will find questions on pool-heating collector area, heat-exchanger pressure relationships and freeze protection during a power outage. The sample also asks about running a pool pump to use heat from west-facing collectors. These questions bring solar thermal installation and maintenance into the practice alongside PV work.

How to use your sample score

Review PV, mounting and solar thermal mistakes separately. A strong result in one area can still leave topics to revisit in another; use the explanations to choose your next practice session.
