About this free practice test

A plumbing job can call for a calculation, an installation rule or a diagnosis. This sample uses all three: pressure and drain-grade problems sit alongside fixture clearances, piping arrangements and service faults. Questions are grouped by CSLB topic areas to show where your answers need more attention. The result helps you choose a study focus; it does not predict whether you will pass. Full prep adds the complete question bank, saved history and readiness tracking.

Free C-36 Plumbing Contractor practice test — FAQ

Where can I get the free C-36 study guide PDF?

Use the study-guide link on this page to download CSLB's free Plumbing (C-36) PDF. It sets out the exam topics, lists study references and includes three sample questions. The practice test above gives you 20 original questions online, with explanations and a result grouped by topic.

Which plumbing codes does CSLB list for the C-36 exam?

The guide lists the 2025 California Plumbing Code, the 2025 California Mechanical and Building Codes, the 2025 California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen), the California manual on traffic control devices, the Cal/OSHA safety orders, and the Underground Service Alert (811) guidelines for digging. The exam is closed-book, so these references are for studying, not for test day.

How hard is the C-36 plumbing exam?

The outline combines calculations, installation and service work. Planning and Estimating and Underground and Rough Systems are the two largest areas. The exam is closed-book and allows 3-1/2 hours. Questions have four choices with one best answer, and there is no penalty for guessing. Use the sample to identify whether your next review should cover calculations, installation rules or fault diagnosis.

Can I take the C-36 exam in Spanish?

Yes. CSLB lists C-36 among the exams available in Spanish, and the Law & Business exam is offered in Spanish too. You can also prepare in Spanish: the Test2Pro site works in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian, and practice questions can be shown in 8 languages.

What math is on the C-36 plumbing exam?

CSLB says some questions involve mathematical computation and provides a calculator. In this free sample, you calculate static pressure at an outlet above a water meter and the vertical drop along a sloped drain. Practice keeping pressure, height, length and grade distinct. These examples show selected plumbing calculations, not every type that may appear on the exam.

Does the C-36 practice test include service and repair questions?

Yes. The sample includes locating a likely leak from water-meter behavior, investigating an unstable water level in a steam boiler, and identifying what is needed when a gas-piping flange is opened for repair. Read each condition carefully: the leak scenario rules out other upstream water use before asking for a diagnosis.

How to use your sample score

Check whether each missed answer came from units and calculations, an installation requirement or a service diagnosis. Review that kind of problem first, then track it through saved history in full prep.
